What happens when you take a perfectly good instrument one thats
been around for hundreds of years and completely rethink it?
Many musicians have dug their hands into the piano, John Cage prepared
it with bolts between the strings, others have strummed it or hit it
with their hands, but one of the most ethereal and unorthodox
techniques is that of bowed piano.
First suggested by the composer Curtis Curtis Smith in 1972, the
technique uses flexible bows made from monofilament nylon fishing line
which are then coated in rosin. The nylon is threaded under the
strings, and the performer can coax a sustained tone from the piano.
Bowed piano has since been adopted and expanded upon by various other
composers, including George Crumb and more extensively by Stephen
Scott.
The Soniccouture Bowed Piano instrument was recorded using a 9 foot
Baldwin Grand, a popular model with Bowed practitioners. A matched
pair of Bruel Kjaer microphones were the only choice to capture such
a sound. Each key has alteate samples to prevent repetition of
attack transients, and there are 3 articulations per key Normal
bowing, Hard bowing, and short, staccato bows. The Normal and Hard
samples are looped long, for infinite sustain. When playing, you can
crossfade from normal to hard bowing using the mod wheel, and the
staccato bows are activated via a keyswitch.
The ultimate pad sound? Organic, shape shifting, massive, foreboding
yet delicate.. The sound of the Bowed Piano is incredibly versatile,
very musical and completely unique. It seems to strike a middle ground
somewhere between a synthesiser pad and a stringed instrument and
manages to sound like neither. A sound that adds space and movement to
a composition, also bringing a magical, shimmering high end and
baleful character that evokes so much.

The Hang Drum
Soniccoutures quest for the exotic, the unique, the
esoteric, and the downright weird and quirky, brings
us to our latest obsession, the Hang Drum.
You may not have heard of the Hang its a
relatively new instrument and its extremely hard to
get hold of one. First invented in the year 2000 by
PANArt, they are hand built in Switzerland by two
very dedicated people, Felix and Sabina. If you want
one, you must ask them if they will build you one. If
they agree, then you may have to wait up to 2 years.
The Hang Drum is played with the hands. Everyone who
gets to play one falls in love with it a little bit.
Its incredibly sensitive and dynamic it rings pure
and true. It sounds like magic. The entire disc
resonates at a central frequency as your hands move
around the edge teasing the notes out.
Two Different Drums
There are two types of Hang, the Mk1 and Mk2. The Mk
1 had 8 notes around the Ding. These were available
in 45 different tunings, and PANArt produced nearly
4000 of them. The Mk 2 is basically the same shape
but has a brass coating on the top as well as around
the rim. The Mk 2 comes in only five different
tunings and has only seven notes around the Ding. It
is a more sturdy design, stays in tune better over
time, and has a slightly longer and purer ring. We
have recorded an example of each Hang Drum for this
sampled instrument.
The Kontakt 2 Hang Instruments
The Soniccouture Hang Instruments feature over 1000
samples per drum, with up to 21 velocity layers. The
Hang drums have been sampled in 6 different areas
Gu, Ding, Outer Ding, Tone field Centre, Tone Field
Edge, and in between the Tone field. Each area was
sampled being played with Finger, Slap and knuckle,
which is triggered by key switches. Each hit has up
to 3 alteate round robin versions, to ensure there
is no machine gun effect.
We have presented our Hang Drums in their original
keys. This can be quickly transposed using the drop
down menu on the front panel of the instruments.
There is also a full chromatic mapping included , as
well as a choice of different key mappings to suit
different playing styles.
The KSP Hang Jammer
Built into each Soniccouture Hang Instrument is the
Hang Jammer script a generative patte sequencer.
This fantastic real time peformance tool randomly
builds on the notes you play to create organic,
evolving sequences from the Hang. The acompanying
Tweak page means you can Jam and create soundscapes
using the delays, filters and reverbs built into each

The Hang Drum
Soniccoutures quest for the exotic, the unique, the
esoteric, and the downright weird and quirky, brings
us to our latest obsession, the Hang Drum.
You may not have heard of the Hang its a
relatively new instrument and its extremely hard to
get hold of one. First invented in the year 2000 by
PANArt, they are hand built in Switzerland by two
very dedicated people, Felix and Sabina. If you want
one, you must ask them if they will build you one. If
they agree, then you may have to wait up to 2 years.
The Hang Drum is played with the hands. Everyone who
gets to play one falls in love with it a little bit.
Its incredibly sensitive and dynamic it rings pure
and true. It sounds like magic. The entire disc
resonates at a central frequency as your hands move
around the edge teasing the notes out.
Two Different Drums
There are two types of Hang, the Mk1 and Mk2. The Mk
1 had 8 notes around the Ding. These were available
in 45 different tunings, and PANArt produced nearly
4000 of them. The Mk 2 is basically the same shape
but has a brass coating on the top as well as around
the rim. The Mk 2 comes in only five different
tunings and has only seven notes around the Ding. It
is a more sturdy design, stays in tune better over
time, and has a slightly longer and purer ring. We
have recorded an example of each Hang Drum for this
sampled instrument.
The Kontakt 2 Hang Instruments
The Soniccouture Hang Instruments feature over 1000
samples per drum, with up to 21 velocity layers. The
Hang drums have been sampled in 6 different areas
Gu, Ding, Outer Ding, Tone field Centre, Tone Field
Edge, and in between the Tone field. Each area was
sampled being played with Finger, Slap and knuckle,
which is triggered by key switches. Each hit has up
to 3 alteate round robin versions, to ensure there
is no machine gun effect.
We have presented our Hang Drums in their original
keys. This can be quickly transposed using the drop
down menu on the front panel of the instruments.
There is also a full chromatic mapping included , as
well as a choice of different key mappings to suit
different playing styles.
The KSP Hang Jammer
Built into each Soniccouture Hang Instrument is the
Hang Jammer script a generative patte sequencer.
This fantastic real time peformance tool randomly
builds on the notes you play to create organic,
evolving sequences from the Hang. The acompanying
Tweak page means you can Jam and create soundscapes
using the delays, filters and reverbs built into each

We bought three high end Punjab Dhol drums and recorded
them in the same orchestral hall as our Epic Toms.
The Punjab Dhol is a double sided barrel drum large and
bulky to produce the preferred loud bass. The drum
consists of a wooden barrel with animal hide or synthetic
skin stretched over its open ends, covering them completely.
These skins can be stretched or loosened with a tightening
mechanism made up of either interwoven ropes, or nuts and
bolts. Tightening or loosening the skins subtly alters the
pitch of the drum sound. The stretched skin on one of the
ends is thicker and produces a deep, low frequency
higher bass sound and the other thinner one produces a
higher frequency sound. In contemporary Punjabi music,
dhols with synthetic, or plastic, treble skins are very
common. The Tonehammer Epic Dhol drums follows our over
general direction in terms of recording all articulations
at 10 velocity layers and 10 round robin pr. velocity
layers. The Epic Dhol drums contains a great variety of
articulations, since each side of drum produces very
different sounds. Essentially its divided into a bass
section and a snare section. We played the bass section
with the traditional big wooden Dhol stick, mallet,
hands and fingers to ensure we covered the entire range.
The sound is remarkably close to Taiko drums, but with a
little more tone to it. The snare side was recorded with
the traditional thin bamboo Dhol stick, however we also
recorded this side with mallets, brushes and fingers.
In addition we recorded different rimshot positions on
the drum, so the users can create a variety of different
soundings rhythmic textures on the drum. Th library also
contains a substantial amount +800 of BPM based loop
banks for instant user gratification. We recorded the
dhols and other smaller complimentary percussion
instruments together. The loops work perfect with the
multisampled sets, but also work perfectly as stand alone
instant gratification type of music loops.

Sonic Integrity
Studio Works marks an ambitious new milestone in live sounding, funk filled,
organic loop content. Diverse variations of Soul and sub genres are provided
for each instrument choice, with top notch players providing unique character
and originality to their phrase treatment and articulation. We set out to
capture the best of the "Studio A" session feel using premium analog gear
with proprietary mixing and mastering methods. Zero MIDI quantizing was
desired or applied for the purposes of this release, thereby retaining the
live human made vibe in all phrases and grooves.
This 1.8 GB package is immensely compatible with Soul, Funk, Retro, RnB, Acid
Jazz, House, and Downbeat sound environments. In addition to construction kits,
a substantial selection of individual phrases are also provided. These kinds of
tones and the broad range of variety included offer a universal appeal for
countless additional genres, old, new and hybrid. Musical purposes of varying

We strived to maintain richness of tone from the ground up in our approach and
