If youve ever worked with a large choir or listened to one, you know that,
with rare exceptions, part of the sound is often a liberal and possibly indiscriminate
use of vibrato. Now, vibrato is an essential part of a singers tone and phrasing, and
it definitely has its place in ensembles as well as solo singing. But where samples are
conceed, having vibrato is almost as limiting as sampling a Hammond organ through a Leslie:
When you play more than one note, the vibrato rates will be out of sync, and you can never
get the vibrato to match your phrasing.
Which is why Spectrasonics traveled to England, a musical culture with a long tradition of
controlling and even eliminating vibrato when singing. All of the multisampled oos, ohs,
ahs, ees, mms, and vowel combinations sound clear and intelligible, whether sung by full
choir, or men alone, or women alone, or whether piano, forte, or with crescendos and decrescendos.
Now, keep in mind that this is an 80 voice choir, but theres hardly a trace of vibrato in the bunch.
Combine this sonic purity with the beautifully blendable bunch of samples. I found all of the
multisampled patches on this disc to be very musical when I used them on polyphonic that is,
contrapuntal material. The gentle attacks made them less successful when I played in a block chord
style, but there are patches on the other discs that may help you if you need this kind of sound.
The crescendo/decrescendo patches are quite musical, but unfortunately you can not change the rate
of crescendo or decrescendo, since it is part of the performance. On the many patches, the mod wheel
is assigned to volume or dynamic crossfades, so you do have a ready to go alteative for controlling
dynamics.
On this disc, technical editor Mitch Gallagher noticed two of the very few audio blemishes to be found
anywhere in this set. "Some of the full choir samples have an overtone ringing prominently," he points
out, "especially at higher velocities. Its annoying with single notes; when playing chords its almost
offensive." While I, too, heard the harmonics, I felt that it was more in line with the overtones
produced when a group of singers are singing well in tune with each other.
And if you really do need that vibrato texture, there are two such programs, one with light vibrato,
the other with heavy vibrato. The whistling and staccato patches are great, too imagine, 80 people
whistling the same pitch! What a cool sound.

that would see the Terminator films through the next three sequels... Indian drones that have been
flanged and processed to the point of destruction... ambient drums which range from caveous and
spacey to industrial and tortured... aggressive mayhem... most of the samples manage to avoid being
categorized too rigorously... loads of really good sci fi noises and pads, filter sweeps, synthetic
bass sounds and even a couple of Gothic Choirs... the real strength of this collection lies in its
numerous evolving, textural sweeps.... It really is difficult to pigeonhole this disk other than to
say that the overall coefficient of weirdness is significantly higher than average, but I have no

to be quite popular a genre in their own right. Perhaps the best testament that I can give to the CD is
that it took about twice as long to review as a sample CD usually takes. Why?, Because I spent way too
much time playing around with the sounds. Although the collection is firmly in the heavily processed
weird sounds category many of the sounds just invite playing with, which I accepted way too many times.
Despite the abstract nature of many of the sounds there is still an underlying musical usability current
throughout the collection. There is hardly a weak link in the CD and the sections such as Ambient, Drone,
Fuzz, Hits, Pads and Synths are just excellent with some real stunning sounds... You can tell the effort
that has gone into the collection, lots of subtle complexity, varying modulation and velocity effects,
patch variations and so forth that just demonstrate the work behind the project apart from what your ears
are obviously telling you. Down sides... phew. Nope been sitting here for three minutes and cant think
of anything worth mentioning... a timeless collection. If your making ambient, space, new age, soundtrack
type tracks Id put this right at the top of your sample CD wishlist, for anyone else whos looking add
something extra to their tracks, an experimental or unusual edge then Id recommend the collection without
hesitation as there is just a whole mountain of really quite excellent genreless sounds here ready to be

The Atmosphere Dream Synth Module. is a software plug in instrument that integrates
a massive, three gigabyte core library of more than one thousand unique sounds and
layer elements, with a powerful and intuitive interface for shaping new textures.
Atmosphere works as a native plug in instrument in all major hosts like Logic,
Digital Performer, Cubase, Nuendo and Pro Tools.
Atmosphere was designed from the ground up by acclaimed synthesist Eric Persing,
well known for his sound design of classic Roland synthesizers and award winning
sample libraries.
Persing and his Inteational team of sound designers developed the Atmosphere
core library using over a hundred sound design devices and nearly every conceivable
synthesis method including Granular, Additive, Wavetable, Wavescanning, Graintable,
Neural Processing, Vintage Analog, Vector, Virtual Analog, FM, Plug In manipulations,
and unusual Acoustic sources as well. This custom core library gives Atmosphere its
unprecedented variety of tonal textures, especially when compared to standard soft
synths.
The range of sounds this instrument is capable of is astonishing, from lush ethereal
pads, to powerful leads, crystalline glass swells to dark brooding atonal clouds,
unusual synth basses, evocative ambiences, deep drones, complex textures, vintage
analog sounds, disturbing noise FX, europhasers, gorgeous ambient string ensembles,
thick trance/techno sounds, wavetable sweeps, vocoded choirs, dense vocal washes,
transparent evolutions, and shimmering prisms of harmonic convergence. Sounds this
rich put even the best hardware synths to shame!
The stellar Sound Quality is this instruments number one feature. The scope of sounds
it can produce is very broad, making it extremely versatile in a wide variety of musical
situations. This is made possible because there has never been a programmable synth
released with such a massive, high resolution core wavetable to work with... completely
dedicated to sound design elements no stock pianos or oboes!
Our original design for Atmosphere was intended for producing evolving pads and rich
ambient sounds. However, in the evolution of the development of Atmosphere, we have
significantly expanded the range of the core librarys sonic palette and added new
functions and capabilities to the interface, which now allow for a vast array of synth
sounds and sound design, including unique leads and percussive sounds as well. We are
very pleased to be releasing Atmosphere as a much more powerful synthesizer, capable
of many inspiring and fresh sounds across the complete range of electronic music. Its
also gratifying that weve been able to include these new capabilities without making
the interface more difficult to use. No matter how our instruments will be evolving over
time, the coerstone of our design philosophy will always be to make powerfully simple
instruments, that every user can get great results with.
